Free Social Media Schedulers Compared (2026): The Honest Table
Which free scheduler actually lets you plan a full month without hitting a paywall? We compared the free plans of Buffer, Later, Metricool, Hootsuite, and Publer side by side — limits, platforms, and what each is actually good at.

Every scheduler's marketing page says "free." The fine print is where it gets interesting: queue caps, monthly post limits, and platforms quietly left out of the free plan. This guide compares what you can actually do for $0 on the major schedulers — so you can pick before you invest your whole content system in one.

| Metricool | Yes — free forever | 1 brand, 20 published posts / month, no LinkedIn or X on free | Analytics lovers — its free plan includes real reporting | $25 / mo |
| Publer | Yes — free forever | 3 accounts (X excluded), 10 queued posts per account | Queue-based scheduling on a budget | $12 / mo |
| Later | 14-day trial, then paid | Limited scheduling during the trial | Instagram-first visual planning and link-in-bio | ~$25 / mo |

How to read a free plan (the fine print)
- Queue cap vs. monthly cap. Buffer's 10-post limit is a queue cap — slots refill as posts publish, so you can post 40+ times a month free. Metricool's 20-post limit is a monthly cap — use them and you're done. Know which one you're signing up for.
- Which platforms are missing? Metricool's free plan excludes LinkedIn and X. Publer's excludes X. If your audience lives on the excluded platform, the plan isn't free for you.
- How far ahead can you plan? A queue cap means you can't batch a full month on Sunday. A real calendar lets you see 30 days at once and drag posts around.
- Does the free plan include analytics? Metricool is the standout here — real reporting on free. Most others lock history behind paid tiers. If you track engagement goals on every post, check whether "free" includes the numbers.
What you can actually do for $0 on ContentCalendar Pro
- Unlimited posts, projects, and platforms — no queue caps, no monthly limits
- A visual calendar with awareness-day reminders built in
- Post Score: every post graded before it goes out
- Set an engagement goal and log the actual result — goal vs. actual tracking on every post
- Ready-made Starter Packs that import a month of content in one click
- Google Calendar sync and public client share pages
- Free tools: caption, hashtag, and idea generators with no signup
That's the whole point of the free tier here — no paywall waiting at post #21. Create your free account and build your month before the coffee cools.
When the paid tools are worth it
Honesty check: if you need competitor benchmarking and cross-channel ad management, Metricool's paid plans earn their price. If you're a team that needs approval workflows and unlimited users, Buffer's Team plan is hard to beat. And if Instagram link-in-bio is your entire business, Later's tooling is genuinely best-in-class. But if you're one creator or one small business planning your own content — a month ahead, with engagement tracking — you shouldn't need to pay for that in 2026.
